Focus: Parent Conferences & Grades, IRP (Green and Blue), Correcting the SPA essay, Collecting the Practice SPA (for those who didn't bring it last week, and will get less credit as a result).

: Correcting the SPA Essay - in your trios, we will score three SPA essays each. The goal is to see what a "4" looks like, what a "3" looks like, what a "2" looks like, what a "1" looks like... and so on. SPA scale:

1pt: Thesis states what you believe about teenagers and when they should be allowed (if ever) to drive.
1pt: Two (or more) pieces of evidence that backs up your Thesis.
1pt: Explain each of your pieces of evidence and how they back up your Thesis.
1pt: Mention a Counterclaim and explain how your Thesis is still better.

4=A 3=C 2=D 1=F 0=Nothing. You didn't do it.

  1. Step 1: Read Essay.
  2. Step 2: Look for the 4 Required Parts.
  3. Step 3: If you see a required part, write "+1" and the type. If you do not see a required part, write "+0" and what's missing.
  4. Step 4: Add it all up. Write score on front cover, and CB: "Your Name". Keep until end of period.

AL: Discuss "Students Teach" project on Voicethread.

: Parent conference night. Students should have by now corrected another period's SPA essays; they should also have had an opportunity to either pre-correct or post-correct their own SPA essays.

HW: Bring your parents to PC night!

: I will most likely be out today for a meeting. I might be on campus, and if I am I will try to visit. You have a test today - you will be tested on how well you can write a SPA-Type Persuasive Essay that has all four of the key parts (see Monday's post above).

You will be each given a booklet. You have to write an essay answering the prompt that has all four of the key parts. Good luck!

HW: Revise and have a final draft to turn in Thursday! Also, work on your IRPs.

Bring on Thursday
1. In-class rough draft of test essay
2. Revised final draft of test essay

: Peer-correct and finish "Video Games" test.

: Collect "Video Games" Test. IRP presentations - everyone who is Green should go today. Any Greens who go on Monday will have their grades reduced to a maximum of B, even after voting. IRP is worth 200 base points. Here's the scale
  • A+ = 220
  • A = 190
  • B = 170
For the remainder of the class, IRP presentations and work on IRPs.

Bring books on Monday. You will be reading "Shoulders" by Naomi Shihab Nye on P. 232 for HW this weekend. If you have not finished your IRP, you should also do so this weekend.
